Pozycja Thermal water – more than water!(Wydawnictwo Politechniki Łódzkiej, 2022) Witkowska, Monika; Śmiegielski, KrzysztofThe use of thermal waters both for external use and for consumption is presented. Nowadays, the use of ecological products of natural origin is promoted, allowing for a significant improvement in the psycho-physical condition of users. Research is carried out to create natural products that comprehensively improve not only the condition of the skin, but the entire body of the user. Thanks to the development of modern technologies used both in cosmetics and other industries, it is possible to effectively use the composition and properties of thermal waters.Pozycja Polyphenols and saponins – properties and application in cosmetics(Wydawnictwo Politechniki Łódzkiej, 2023) Mietlińska, KatarzynaThe cosmetics market is an extremely dynamic, developing branch of the industry. There is a constant need for multifunctional ingredients that will meet the growing expectations of consumers. Active ingredients of natural origin are also appreciated more and more often. One of the most commonly used plant extracts are those rich in polyphenols. These ingredients are known for their antioxidant properties, but they can have many more functions in relation to human skin. They act against wrinkles, brighten skin, support protection against harmful UV rays, etc. Other interesting active plant ingredients are saponins – compounds with an amphiphilic structure – that can be natural alternative to surfactants or emulsifiers. They possess antimicrobial activity and strengthen blood vessels. This article briefly characterizes polyphenols and saponins, taking into account their structure and classification, as well as indicates and describes their properties that can be used in the cosmetics industry.Pozycja Polish plants as raw materials for cosmetic purposes(Wydawnictwo Politechniki Łódzkiej, 2019) Mietlińska, Katarzyna; Przybyt, Małgorzata; Kalemba, DanutaThe cosmetics market is more and more demanding, and there is a constant request for new products. The aim of the study was to find plant materials occurring commonly in Poland that would have a multidirectional effect on the skin. Research focuses on plants with high content of saponins and polyphenols. Ability to create foam and ability to reduce the surface tension of water as a determinant of saponin content was checked. The Folin-Ciocalteu test was made to check the content of polyphenols. Fifty-seven raw materials were examined. To the most promising for cosmetic purposes belong goldenrods (Solidago), especially their leaves. Much better resu lts were obtained for S. canadensis and S. gigantea, than S. virgaurea.Pozycja Microbiological contaminants in cosmetics – isolation and characterization(Wydawnictwo Politechniki Łódzkiej, 2014) Budecka, Angela; Kunicka-Styczyńska, AlinaCosmetic industries are not obliged to produce sterile cosmetics. Nevertheless, they are liable to assure safety of the product to the potential consumer. The purpose of the study was isolation and identification of microorganisms with the ability to survive and develop in cosmetics. Five cosmetics applied for facial skin and one cosmetic for body care were tested for the presence of contaminating microbiota. Eight microbial strains were isolated from three cosmetics, from which seven were derived from cosmetic applied on the facial skin. One strain was isolated from body care cosmetic. The recovered microbial strains were characterized and identified to the species level as Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Serratia liquefaciens and Candida parapsilosis. The isolates were opportunistic pathogens and may cause skin irritation and infections, especially via wounded epithelium in immunocompromised consumers. Moreover, due to application area, they pose a health risk to the consumer due to easy access to the eye area as well as nasal and oral cavities through usage of cosmetic preparation.
