The city name derived from the name of count’s Antoni Ostrowski father Tomasz Ostrowski. Tomaszow used to be an important industrial centre of textile, engineering, metal and leather industries. After 1989 the decline of industry and the city commenced. In 2008 the Revitalization of the City Core of Tomaszow Mazowiecki was enlisted by the Marshal Office of Łódź Province to the group of project of crucial importance for Łódź Region.
