The development of food production technology as well as retail sales demands drive continuous improvement in packaging. The main areas of improvement are: ensuring product safety, providing relevant information, streamlining the distribution process and facilitating end-use. The obligation to meet consumer requirements and expectations in those areas falls on food producers; however, all other entities forming the food supply chain should take part, and some responsibility, in the process of adapting the packaging to consumer needs.
